IAN ANDERSON COMMEMORATES 40th ANNIVERSARY OF JETHRO TULL’S GROUNDBREAKING ALBUM “THICK AS A BRICK” WITH UK TOUR

While busy with a string of highly anticipated UK acoustic shows, Ian Anderson announces he will hit the road again in April 2012 for a 19 date UK tour commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Jethro Tull’s 1972 Billboard No. 1 ‘Thick As A Brick’.

The band’s chart-topping record will be played in its entirety – as initially recorded – for the first time since its original tour in 1972. ‘Thick as a Brick’ was a concept album based on a poem written by a fictitious 10 year old boy Gerald Bostock – in reality Anderson himself, who wrote both music and lyrics. It only featured one seamless 45 minutes long track, although it was split to accommodate the album on vinyl and cassette. It reached number 5 in the UK charts

Thick As A Brick – Whatever happened to Gerald Bostock’ promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime musical experience, rediscovering a timeless milestone of progressive rock. The performances will also incorporate video projection and other theatrical elements. Ian Anderson performs some of his finest work with the added maturity and skill acquired across a 40 years strong career.

Anderson says: “I never thought I would do this music again in its entirety but, over the last couple of years, I have grown to rather like the idea and the prospect of a Prog moment of profound excess. Question is: will I now become filled with some dark and nefarious need to take this murky, anal business further? You never know….. “

Widely recognized as the man who introduced the flute to rock music, Ian also plays ethnic flutes and whistles together with acoustic guitar and the mandolin family of instruments, providing the acoustic textures which have been an integral part of most of the Tull repertoire and his solo material. In recent years, he has toured more and more under his own name in solo concerts with orchestras, string quartets, featured soloists and in his other eclectic acoustic shows.

During the ‘Thick As a Brick’ tour Anderson will be joined by John O’Hara on keyboards, David Goodier on bass, Florian Opahle on guitar and Scott Hammond on drums as well as guest performers.

JETHRO TULL’S IAN ANDERSON ANNOUNCES ACOUSTIC TOUR

JETHRO TULL’S IAN ANDERSON ANNOUNCES ACOUSTIC TOUR

IanAndersonJethro Tull’s, Ian Anderson invites you to join him as he embarks upon a 13 date acoustic tour of the UK in September 2011.

Indulge yourself as Anderson brings you a feast of Tull repertoire, much of which is already, acoustic music, whether whole songs or sections of the blockbusters such as Thick As A Brick and Aqualung.

Anderson says: “I have always wanted to go out in the UK with a small line-up, to play and to restructure the songs and music for a more intimate and personalized performance. After many years of performing in this way for radio broadcasts in the USA, it seems like fun to bring this approach to the UK fans, old and new, and to make them feel like they are in my living room for an impromptu family concert.”

As a trio consisting of Ian, German guitar virtuoso Florian Opahle, and pianist/accordionist/ percussionist John O’Hara, he will play Tull acoustic classics, alongside rare and less well-known songs and other re-arranged Tull rock material. In addition, some new material specially written for these tours will make an appearance. This will be the most intimate tour that Anderson has ever undertaken and the audience can expect anecdotes and musical surprises to keep them intrigued.

As the self-professed “unplugged guy with a bunch of noisy friends” Ian Anderson commands much respect as an acoustic musician amongst his peers. The only original member of Jethro Tull, Ian remains synonymous with the brand identity.

Drawing on Folk, Classical, Rock and Jazz music styles, Ian continues to blend elements of many world music cultures to delight his fans.

Throw away the ear-plugs, sit back, relax and savor Anderson’s musical smorgasbord.

JETHRO TULL ANNOUNCE 2010 UK TOUR

JETHRO TULL ANNOUNCE 2010 UK TOUR

jtull copyJethro Tull will hit the road in the UK in March for a 23 date tour. These shows will feature an assortment of ‘Best of Tull’ repertoire with some rare gems thrown in for good measure. Support to be announced.

Ian says about this tour “Of all the music recorded by Jethro Tull over the years, there are several songs which have rarely, if ever, been performed in public. We look forward to introducing some of this material to the setlist in 2010 along with some of the tried and trusty favourites. Martin Barre and I, along with long-standing drummer Doane Perry and old friends David Goodier and John O’Hara will bring variety and depth to the concerts with the aid of a few forgotten musical instruments currently being dug out of the rusty skip and dusted down for action. (I know I put that Sousaphone somewhere safe….)”

JETHRO TULL’S IAN ANDERSON IN CONCERT

Ian-Anderson-logoAs the self-professed “unplugged guy with a bunch of noisy friends” Jethro Tull’s legendary frontman, Ian Anderson commands much respect as an acoustic musician among his peers. The only original member of Jethro Tull, Ian remains synonymous with the brand identity.

Now, after 40 years of leading Tull, playing in 52 countries on the way, Ian Anderson brings his new tour to the UK in September for both old and new fans alike.

Although Jethro Tull are usually found sharing the same delicatessen shelf as Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who, The Rolling Stones and the other worthy stalwarts of the British “Rock Invasion” of the seventies. It is all too often forgotten that a large part of the Tull repertoire is, in fact, acoustic music, whether whole songs or sections of the blockbusters such as Thick As A Brick and Aqualung.

With a band consisting of German guitar virtuoso Florian Opahle, pianist and accordionist John O’Hara, bassist David Goodier, Drummer Mark Mondsir and special guests, Ian will play Tull acoustic classics as well as other specially re-arranged Tull rock material and, in addition, some new material specially written for these tours.

Drawing on Folk, Classical, Rock and Jazz music styles, Ian blends elements of many world music cultures to delight his fans.

Throw away the ear-plugs, sit back, relax and savour Anderson’s musical smorgasbord.

JETHRO TULL’S IAN ANDERSON TO PERFORM AT “FLUTEWISE LIVE”

JETHRO TULL’S IAN ANDERSON TO PERFORM AT “FLUTEWISE LIVE”

Ian-Anderson-logoIan Anderson is known throughout the world of rock as the flute and voice behind the legendary Jethro Tull and is widely recognized as the man who introduced the flute to rock music. On May 3rd, he will perform at London’s Barbican Centre, which promises to be the highlight of “Flutewise Live!”.

Ian’s concert is aimed not only at the young flute players/students but also at the Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull fans, who may appreciate a concert with more emphasis on the flute side of his work and the opportunity to hear some other examples of flute styles from the acclaimed guests who will join Ian on stage.

Ian describes the performance, “Of course, the music will mainly be from the Jethro Tull repertoire but will feature more of the acoustic and esoteric pieces rather than only the Rock songs, although many familiar Tull songs will be included, just to shock the parents and music teachers! A government health warning still comes with my flute-playing. At least, I hope so!”

Flutewise Live is a whole day of activities aimed at anyone interested in flute playing and includes workshops, master classes, play along activities, ensemble playing, performance opportunities and displays.

Ian will be joined by 3 eminent flautists:

Ian Clarke is acknowledged as one of the leading player/composers in the flute world and is a Professor of Flute at Guildhall School of Music & Drama (www.ianclarke.net)

Abigail Burrows was born in 1982 and took up the flute aged seven at her local music centre.  She was awarded a scholarship to The Purcell School of Music aged 8 and in 2000 continued her studies at The Royal College of Music. A successful soloist and keen ensemble player, Abbie is and extremely active supporter of Flutewise.

Teymour Housego grew up in New Delhi where he learnt the bansuri (Indian bamboo flute). He is also an accomplished Western flautist and studied jazz in Paris. He is currently working on a multicultural bamboo flute project involving flautists from India, the Middle East, Japan and Africa.
