STEVE HACKETT TO RELEASE “THE TOTAL EXPERIENCE LIVE IN LIVERPOOL” THE LIVE 2CD/2DVD, BLU-RAY OF HIS ACOLYTE TO WOLFLIGHT WITH GENESIS REVISITED TOUR

Sleeve SteveHackett_TheTotalExperienceLiveInLiverpoolGroundbreaking prog guitarist Steve Hackett has announced the release of his acclaimed Acolyte To Wolflight With Genesis Revisited Tour as 2CD/2DVD deluxe package and stand-a-lone Blu-Ray and, after three London concert videos, he chose the Liverpool date for the recording. The Total Experience Live In Liverpool will be released on 24th June.

“When Inside Out told me that I could film a gig on the British leg of the 2015 tour for release, I thought that we should do it away from London (and) I felt doing it in Liverpool had a certain ring to it” – explains Hackett enthusiastically – “This is an extraordinary city and the Philharmonic Hall is an extraordinary venue. Besides, it’s not as if Liverpool is known for having any good music – there’s never been a good band from there. Ha!” Hackett’s love for Liverpool goes back to his time with Genesis: “We played there a few times in the ’70s, and the fans have always been very good to me there. And as a huge Beatles fan, I also know the landmarks there, such as Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields. I have been on the Magical Mystery Tour. So, the city means a lot to me from that point of view as well. The Beatles set the benchmark for all of us who have followed; we take our imagination from them.”

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of his first solo album ‘Voyage Of The Acolyte’ and following his latest ‘Wolflight’, the ‘Acolyte to Wolflight with Genesis Revisited’ tour was Steve’s effort to represent the many chapters of his career. Featuring two sets – one highlighting his solo work, the second paying tribute to Genesis – the two hour performance was greeted with enthusiasm by both fans and critics.

“It wasn’t an easy job to decide what to include, but I think there was a good balance between old and new.” – Hackett comments. “What I have always born in mind when choosing the songs is what they mean to the fans. Time has a way of turning them into an emotional calendar for people. These songs take on an importance and become part of their lives. So, when I do them live, authenticity is important. I am aware that what I have to do is find a connection between nostalgia and what things can sound like in a contemporary setting”. Liverpool was one of the dates with Amanda Lehmann guesting on ‘Shadow Of The Hierophant’, which was performed in its full version with an extended drum solo showcasing Gary O’Toole’s skills, a triumphant closing to the first set.

A multi-camera shoot, the recording was done with no prior rehearsals, but Hackett had every confidence in the people he was working with. Paul Green, who did the filming and editing, and Ben Fenner, who mixed the audio, work with Steve regularly and knew exactly what he was looking for. “Paul was also very innovative” – Hackett reveals – “He used one particular technique to show what Gary was doing on drums, and it is an unusual effect I have never seen before. The drums seem to arc, because of the lens he’s using. It gives a very different perspective to the whole viewing experience” The acoustics in the Philharmonic Hall were very impressive on the night, albeit rather challenging; Ben, who does the live sound for the band, took that challenge with superb results. What you hear in the mix, though, is exactly what the band sounded like on the night with no extensive ‘fixing’ in the studio, as live should be.

Three of the most significant albums from the Charisma years will also be released separately as deluxe 2CD/DVD editions. Please Don’t Touch, Spectral Mornings and Defector all bring back some cherished moments from Hackett’s past…

“On ‘Please Don’t Touch’ I’d finally embarked on a permanent solo career – Steve recalls. – The strength of the ideas combined with the extraordinary people who had carried them out was a revelation to me. I wanted to be invisible on this record and just to be the catalyst. Each track functioned like an excerpt from a sampler album. Different teams met different styles and that pan-genre approach has stayed with me up to the present day… It’s no coincidence that Steven Wilson offered to remix this stuff in 5.1 surround sound. He’d originally been inspired by ‘Please Don’t Touch’ when he was barely a teenager.”

He then goes on sharing his memories about ‘Spectral Mornings’: “Suddenly there was a great touring band, wondrous players and singers all. I no longer stood alone. Substantial parts of ‘Spectral Mornings’ had been road-tested. Audiences were hungry for it in a way I couldn’t have imagined. Once more the combination of the classically trained and the self-taught together kindled a kind of blue flame around those songs.”

Finally, he remembers the ‘Defector’ days… “After the opening snake charmer-like flute notes of ‘The Steppes’, drums boomed out from the next door church we used as an echo chamber, sounding more pagan than C of E in spirit. I was still in love with this killer band that had versatility tattooed all over… Whilst ‘Spectral Mornings’ was a hard act to follow, ‘Defector’ pipped it in the charts by going Top Ten!”

STEVE HACKETT – ‘WOLFLIGHT’ INTERVIEW VIDEO LAUNCHED

STEVE HACKETT – ‘WOLFLIGHT’ INTERVIEW VIDEO LAUNCHED

World-renowned guitarist/composer Steve Hackett returns with his new solo album Wolflight on the 30th March 2015 in Europe. With just over a week to go till the album release, an interview with Steve on the album’s title track, taken from the special edition version of the album, has been released. Listen & find out more about the song and the ideas behind it here:

A lyric video for the track ‘The Wheel’s Turning’ was also recently released and you can find that here:

Steve had this to say about the song: ‘In contrast to the primal and gothic nature of much of the album, ‘The Wheel’s Turning’ has a fun and nostalgic vibe. It recaptures my childhood memories of London’s Battersea Funfair which gave me hours of joy and challenge in an otherwise grey world. Take that trip back in time with me, fasten your seat belt and enjoy the ride…’

It was also recently revealed that Roine Stolt (Transatlantic, The Flower Kings) would be joining him on bass and 12-string guitar for the UK tour dates later this year.

A teaser trailer for the album, featuring snippets of new music plus some insight from Steve himself, can be viewed here:
